January 5, 2022: Planning the New Year for Success   Dr. Donna Heretick: Dr. Heretick discusses the importance of self-understanding and having an action plan for success in graduate school and during the dissertation. There is a focus on understanding our various types and strengths of motivation, self-expectations and self-efficacy, networking, and organizational skills. Journaling and other tools to building self-awareness and planning are presented. It is a great way to start a new year or to regroup at any time during the doctoral process.   Video            PPT

December 1, 2021: Resources for Doctoral Students   Dr. Brenda Hudson, Senior Core Faculty & Lead Faculty, CAEX: Dr. Hudson presented on the free CAEX doctoral writing workshops for students. The workshops prepare students who are beginning the prospectus, working on their proposal, and completing their dissertations. This is an invaluable resource for consideration both by doctoral students and faculty who are interested in supporting professional writing skills. Dr. Christy Fraenza, Manager, Doctoral Peer Mentoring Program: Dr. Fraenza described the peer mentoring program and related activities for students who are beginning their doctoral work. Peer mentors provide insider tips, resources, guidance, and advice to help incoming doctoral student establish social connects, adapt to the role of scholar-practitioner, and build a foundation for success.  Video   PPT  

November 3, 2021: Andrea Lemieux, Walden librarian for Psychology and Counseling, provided more, very useful information on resources for the important literature review process of dissertation research. October 6, 2021: Amber Cook from the Walden Writing Center discussed bias-free language guidelines for the APA 7 publication updates. These guidelines challenge us to be respectful of individual and group identities, constructs, and terminology. July 7, 2021: Is Your Research Truly Data-Driven? Drs. Alfie Weinbaum and Helen Schleckser discussed data-mining the wide world of secondary data resources for research. They provided many helpful hints and resources. Their handout also provides leads to many resources.

June 2, 2021: 10 Job Search Lessons for Psych Majors Interested in Research Careers (Dr. Lorie Sousa). Dr. Sousa shares her own experiences and tips for growing your professional options and opportunities in relation to applying research skills in industry. The 10 tips can help you prepare and plan for entering the profession with a new PhD in hand and/or transitioning and growing within your current career. The presentation is lively, with great audience questions and discussions at the end.

May 5, 2021: Quantitative Research Design Alignment (Dr. Reginald Taylor of CRQ)
This is a "must see" for anyone who is in the processes of working up their prospectus and then proposal. Dr. Taylor presents a straight forward approach to the essentials of identifying the problem and research gap, to creating the research question and clarifying the variables, to selecting measures for operationalizing the variables. Everyone should have this presentation in their video libraries!

April 7, 2021: Cleaning and Screening Data Dr. Donna Heretick presented the steps for cleaning and screening continuous data prior to performing statistical analyses to test research hypotheses. The presentation provides an overview of the what, why, and how of checking for data accuracy, missing values, outliers, internal reliability of measurement scales, and assumptions of the intended statistical tests. In addition, options for dealing with possible problems are presented. YouTube videos are identified throughout for hands-on demonstrations of each of the steps that are described in the presentation. Questions of members of the audience also enrich the discussion.

March 3, 2021: Online Survey Research Drs. Donna Heretick and John Agnew discuss and demonstrate ways and means to use online research tools to complete qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods designs online in this time of COVID. Options for recruiting and for creating online surveys and questions are identified and demonstrated. 


February 3, 2021: Qualitative Designs: Special Topics Drs. Marcus and Verdinelli presented a very thorough review of different options for qualitative designs and when and why to select each possibility. This is a valuable resource for anyone considering or beginning a dissertation that may involve qualitative research questions.

​​​​January 6, 2021 (Wednesday, 8 PM Eastern): New Year's Resolutions for your Dissertation Drs. Heretick and Agnew considered ways to support successful progress along the dissertation journey, such as time, space, energy/focus, support, and resources. There were lively discussions and sharing also by attendees. This is worth reviewing at any time to re-evaluate your current well-being and lifestyle choices as you move along the dissertation path.

December 2, 2020 (Wednesday, 8 PM Eastern): Considering Research with Secondary Data? Are you considering secondary data resources for your research project? In this presentation, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of secondary data sources. Andrea Lemieux, our Psychology Librarian in the Walden Library, presented on search strategies and tools available in the Walden Library for identifying and locating secondary data sources. Dr. Heretick presented considerations for evaluating the purpose, method, design (including reliability and validity), and usefulness when selecting secondary data sets for quantitative research. Dr. Agnew discussed some of the considerations to bear in mind when considering secondary data for qualitative research. Many resources are presented for your use.

November 4, 2020 (Wednesday, 8 PM Eastern): Selecting Tests and Measures for Your Research.  Quantitative research frequently involves tests and measures for operationalization of the research variables. Strong designs employ instruments that are reliable and valid for the population being investigated. It is important to understand how to find, evaluate, and receive access and permission to use these measures in your research. In Part 1, Drs. Heretick and Agnew reviewed consideration for selection of measurement tools. In Part 2, Andrea Lemieux, our Psychology Librarian in the Walden Library, presented on how to search for tests and measures, including validity/reliability information, in the Library databases and how to locate the appropriate information to obtain permission for use.

Response Rate.
Dr. Leilani Gjellstad, Chair of the Walden IRB, presented on ethical methods to recruit participants for research studies. She provided hands-on tips for preparing your recruitment poster/email to catch attention and attract those who may consider to continue on to seek more information about the study. She also discussed the use of incentives and other methods to increase recruitment.

April 8, 2010 (4 PM Eastern): Emotional Intelligence  It’s an Inside Job (video). Dr. Lori Lacivita  presented on emotional intelligence and how it applies to “soft skills,” coping, and healthy communications both within and beyond your academic life. Powerpoint

March 4, 2020: Skills for Seeking Funding for Research and Other Activities: Grants (video). Andrea Lemieux our Walden Librarian presented on Pivot, a database for finding grant opportunities. Dr. Molly Lauck, Director of the Walden Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, Center for Research Quality, presented on internal grants offered by Walden University to students (and faculty and staff). This information is a great resource for all who are in the dissertation process and have an IRB-approved proposal. February 5, 2020: Preparing for the Form & Style Review. Dr. Joseph Gredler, Form and Style Editor, will present on expectations for form and style for dissertations. Separate videos were created for various topics. Click on the links to access videos and other related documents.
      Part 1 (Video): In the first part of this presentation, Dr. Gredler reviews APA formatting rules for margins, preliminary pages (title, abstract, table of contents,  fonts, headings, verb tenses, active and passive voice, use of first person in writing, and anthropomorphism. (approximately 30 minutes) 
               Part 2 (Video): This part of the presentation covered rules for intext citations and reference lists. (approximately 58 minutes)
               Part 3 (Video): In this final part of the presentation, Dr. Gredler covered APA formatting rules for numbers, punctuation, tables and figures, appendices. In addition, Dr. Gredler explained ways to use and work successfully within the Dissertation Template. (Approximately 45 minutes)
