January 5, 2022: Planning the New Year for Success Dr. Donna Heretick: Dr. Heretick discusses the importance of self-understanding and having an action plan for success in graduate school and during the dissertation. There is a focus on understanding our various types and strengths of motivation, self-expectations and self-efficacy, networking, and organizational skills. Journaling and other tools to building self-awareness and planning are presented. It is a great way to start a new year or to regroup at any time during the doctoral process. Video PPT

December 1, 2021: Resources for Doctoral Students Dr. Brenda Hudson, Senior Core Faculty & Lead Faculty, CAEX: Dr. Hudson presented on the free CAEX doctoral writing workshops for students. The workshops prepare students who are beginning the prospectus, working on their proposal, and completing their dissertations. This is an invaluable resource for consideration both by doctoral students and faculty who are interested in supporting professional writing skills. Dr. Christy Fraenza, Manager, Doctoral Peer Mentoring Program: Dr. Fraenza described the peer mentoring program and related activities for students who are beginning their doctoral work. Peer mentors provide insider tips, resources, guidance, and advice to help incoming doctoral student establish social connects, adapt to the role of scholar-practitioner, and build a foundation for success. Response Rate. Dr. Leilani Gjellstad, Chair of the Walden IRB, presented on ethical methods to recruit participants for research studies. She provided hands-on tips for preparing your recruitment poster/email to catch attention and attract those who may consider to continue on to seek more information about the study. She also discussed the use of incentives and other methods to increase recruitment.

librarian for Psychology, walks you through the resources that are available
through "Ask the Librarian" and other services of the library to plan
and execute a thorough literature review for Chapter 2 of your dissertation proposal
(as well as any updated material you are looking for as you write Chapter
5).

Social Problem to Research Question (Video). Often the first
challenge for dissertation research is to take a social problem that really
interests you and scale it down to one specific question that can be the basis
for your research. This webinar presented tips, methods, and resources for
moving through this process as you begin your prospectus and continue to

May 5, 2021: Quantitative Research Design Alignment (Dr. Reginald Taylor of CRQ)
This is a "must
see" for anyone who is in the processes of working up their prospectus and
then proposal. Dr. Taylor presents a straight forward approach to the
essentials of identifying the problem and research gap, to creating the
research question and clarifying the variables, to selecting measures for
operationalizing the variables. Everyone should have this presentation in their
video libraries!

(Wednesday, 8 PM Eastern): Considering Research with Secondary Data? Are
you considering secondary data resources for your research project? In this
presentation, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of secondary data
sources. Andrea Lemieux, our Psychology Librarian in the Walden
Library, presented on search strategies and tools
available in the Walden Library for identifying and
locating secondary data sources. Dr. Heretick presented
considerations for evaluating the purpose, method, design (including
reliability and validity), and usefulness when selecting secondary data sets
for quantitative research. Dr. Agnew discussed some of the considerations to bear
in mind when considering secondary data for qualitative research. Many
resources are presented for your use.

November 4, 2020 (Wednesday, 8 PM Eastern): Selecting Tests and Measures for Your Research. Quantitative research frequently involves tests and measures for operationalization of the research variables. Strong designs employ instruments that are reliable and valid for the population being investigated. It is important to understand how to find, evaluate, and receive access and permission to use these measures in your research. In Part 1, Drs. Heretick and Agnew reviewed consideration for selection of measurement tools. In Part 2, Andrea Lemieux, our Psychology Librarian in the Walden Library, presented on how to search for tests and measures, including validity/reliability information, in the Library databases and how to locate the appropriate information to obtain permission for use.

April 7, 2021: Cleaning and Screening Data Dr. Donna Heretick presented the steps for
cleaning and screening continuous data prior to performing statistical analyses
to test research hypotheses. The presentation provides an overview of the what,
why, and how of checking for data accuracy, missing values, outliers, internal
reliability of measurement scales, and assumptions of the intended statistical
tests. In addition, options for dealing with possible problems are presented.
YouTube videos are identified throughout for hands-on demonstrations of each of
the steps that are described in the presentation. Questions of members of the
audience also enrich the discussion.
